Working the roads in Lafayette County

I-70 and US-24 are the two roads that tie this end of Lafayette County to Kansas City. I-70 comes in through Oak Grove, which spans the county line, and runs east past Bates City, just south of the interstate, and Odessa, the county's largest city, with the I-70 Motorsports Park beside the road east of town. US-24 keeps to the river side: it forms the southern boundary of Napoleon, a short way east of the Independence city limits, and meets Route 13 at Lexington, the county seat, on the south bank of the Missouri.

Most of the county is rural. Lexington stands on river bluffs that were once mined for steamboat coal, Napoleon runs along the river's south bank, and Napoleon and Wellington, a few miles apart, have a crossroads called Waterloo between them. At Odessa, the city lake south-west of town has a boat ramp and dock, which means boat trailers, and the dirt oval and dragstrip east of town bring race cars on trailers. The county also takes in part of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Give dispatch the highway, the nearest town and your direction from it.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Lexington, MO

Lexington, the county seat, stands on the Missouri River bluffs at the junction of Route 13 and US-24 on the south bank. The 1847 courthouse on Main Street, the oldest still in use west of the Mississippi, has a Civil War cannonball lodged in one pillar, and the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site covers the bluff-top battlefield. Coal for river steamboats was once dug from these bluffs. Give the highway and the nearest street or landmark.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Odessa, MO

Odessa, the largest city in Lafayette County, is built along I-70 and takes its name from Odessa in the Russian Empire. East of town beside the interstate, the I-70 Motorsports Park reopened in 2021 with a dirt oval and a dragstrip; Lake Venita is in Dyer Park, and the Odessa City Lake south-west of town has a boat ramp and dock. On I-70, the mile marker and your direction of travel matter more than the exit name.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Higginsville, MO

Higginsville lies on Route 13 south-east of Lexington, and the highway crosses I-70 and US-40 south of town. Route 20 starts here, running east toward Corder past the south edge of the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site, the grounds of the old Missouri Confederate Soldiers' Home, and Route 213 runs north from the site to US-24 west of Dover. The town is named for Harvey Higgins, who owned the town site. Give the route number and say whether the memorial site or I-70 is closer.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Concordia, MO

Concordia, in south-eastern Lafayette County, sits at exit 58 of I-70, where Route 23 crosses the interstate and US-40. Route 23 continues north to Alma and south toward Knob Noster and Whiteman Air Force Base; Higginsville lies to the north-west. Platted in 1868 and named for a place in Schiller's poem "Das Lied von der Glocke", it drew many German settlers, and St. Paul Lutheran High School is the only residential high school of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod in the country. At exit 58, say whether you are on I-70, a ramp or Route 23.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Wellington, MO

Wellington carries the name of the Duke of Wellington, the British commander at Waterloo, and it sits a few miles east of Napoleon with a Waterloo crossroads in between. Lexington lies to the north-east. Wellington shares its school district, fire protection district and special road district with Napoleon.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Lake Lafayette, MO

Odessa is the landmark for Lake Lafayette, a little city just to its south with water inside its limits and its children in the Odessa school district. Give the street and the road you took out of Odessa to get there.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Bates City, MO

Bates City sits just south of I-70 in western Lafayette County, east of Oak Grove and Blue Springs. Theodore Bates laid it out in 1878 and named it for himself. If your truck made it off the interstate here, tell us which side of I-70 you ended up on and the road you took from the ramp.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Napoleon, MO

Napoleon fills the county's north-west corner, a narrow strip between the Missouri River to the north and US-24 to the south, with Jackson County on its west side. Its name most likely honors Napoleon Bonaparte, and Wellington is a few miles east; a small crossroads halfway between the two is called Waterloo. On US-24, give your direction and the nearest crossroad.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Mayview, MO

Mayview's name comes from how the landscape looked "when viewed on a May day". The small town lies north-east of Odessa and south of Lexington, and Germans who came around the time of the Civil War became a large part of its people. Give the road name and whether Odessa or Lexington is nearer.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Dover, MO

East of Lexington, Dover takes its name from a nearby church, and its post office, opened in 1835, is older than the 1839 town plat. The James M. Dinwiddie House there is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town is in the Lexington school district. When you call, give the road and your direction from Lexington.

What we can do for you here

Lafayette County towing — common questions

Can you haul a race car and its trailer from the I-70 Motorsports Park near Odessa?

Yes. Titan Tow & Repair can flatbed a race car that will not run, tow the truck or trailer that was meant to carry it home, or repair the tow vehicle where it sits, 24 hours a day. The I-70 Motorsports Park is beside I-70 east of Odessa, with a dirt oval and a dragstrip, so tell us whether you are in the pits or the parking area, whether the car is on a trailer, and whether that trailer is open or enclosed. A loaded enclosed trailer behind a failed truck is a different job from a single car.

Can you winch a loaded semi back onto US-24 between Napoleon and Lexington?

Yes, 24 hours a day. Titan Tow & Repair recovers loaded and empty tractor-trailers that have dropped off the pavement on US-24, which keeps to the Missouri River side of Lafayette County, forming Napoleon's southern edge in the north-west corner and meeting Route 13 at Lexington, the county seat. Our WreckMaster-certified operators rig the pull so the load stays on the trailer where possible. Give the direction you were heading, the nearest town or crossroads, how far off the road the truck has gone, and whether it is still upright.

Can you pull a pickup and boat trailer off the ramp at Odessa City Lake?

Yes. Titan Tow & Repair winches out pickups, SUVs and cars that lose grip on a wet ramp and tows boat trailers and the vehicles pulling them, 24 hours a day. Odessa City Lake, south-west of Odessa, has a boat ramp and dock and is managed jointly by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the City of Odessa. Tell us whether the trailer is still hitched, whether any part of the vehicle or trailer is in the water, and roughly what the boat weighs, so the right winch and rigging come the first time.
