Working the roads in Clay County

I-35 runs the length of Clay County, from the Bond Bridge at North Kansas City to the Clinton County line near Holt. On the way it has interchanges with I-435 just south of Pleasant Valley, with US-69 at Claycomo, home of Ford's assembly plant, with Route 152 and Route 291 at Liberty and with Route 92 at Kearney. I-29 breaks away from I-35 near Gladstone's southern tip and heads for the airport, and US-169 runs north through Smithville. Route 291 links Liberty with the Liberty Bend Bridge and Sugar Creek, Route 10 and US-69 lead out to Excelsior Springs, and Route 33 runs through Holt.

This is our home county, and it changes quickly once you leave the interstates. The Missouri River runs along the south edge: North Kansas City sits behind a levee with four highway bridges to downtown, and Randolph and Missouri City stand on the banks. In the east, Mosby lies on the Fishing River and Excelsior Springs on its East Fork, where a dike built after flooding in 1955 guards the Hall of Waters. Freight moves out of the Ford plant at Claycomo and the Hallmark distribution warehouse in Liberty, Smithville Lake brings boat and camper trailers, and the state park at Watkins Mill, near Lawson, draws visitors onto two-lane roads. Give dispatch the road number and the nearest town or bridge.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Gladstone, MO

Gladstone is a suburb whose shopping lines North Oak Trafficway (Route 283), with Route 1 running south toward North Kansas City, US-169 just off its west side and I-29 near its southern tip. Cars, vans and box trucks make up most of its traffic, and four tiny villages sit inside its south-west corner.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Smithville, MO

The Little Platte River runs through Smithville and is dammed just east of town to form Smithville Lake, and the city reaches over the county line into Platte County. US-169 traverses the city, Route 92 crosses its southern third, and Route DD, Main Street downtown, heads out toward the lake and its boat and camper traffic.

Towing in Smithville

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Kearney, MO

North of Liberty, I-35 reaches Kearney at the Route 92 exit. The town grew up around the Kansas City and Cameron Railroad, still running today as BNSF, and Jesse James was born on the family farm north-east of it. Past the interstate the roads soon turn rural, and the shoulders go soft after rain.

Towing in Kearney

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Pleasant Valley, MO

The I-35 and I-435 interchange sits just south of Pleasant Valley, which lies between Claycomo and Liberty with Shoal Creek running through it. A breakdown on those interchange ramps is effectively on its doorstep, so give the interstate, your direction and the ramp before any street name.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Lawson, MO

Out on the Clay and Ray county line north-east of Kearney, Lawson is farm country reached on two-lane roads rather than an interstate. Watkins Mill, now a state park and National Historic Landmark, and the Lawson City Lake north of town draw visitors onto roads whose shoulders soften after rain.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Glenaire, MO

Liberty wraps completely around Glenaire, which grew up as 'Interurban Heights' at the Belleview depot on the old interurban line, was home to the Urban Lake resort between Liberty and Claycomo, and became a city in 1958. Say 'Glenaire' and the street when you call, or dispatch will look for you in Liberty.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Holt, MO

Holt holds a world rainfall record from a June 1947 cloudburst, a fair reminder that a summer storm here can put water over a road in a hurry. The town lies on the Clay and Clinton county line just west of I-35, with Route 33 through it and the Lake Arrowhead reservoir, on the Muddy Fork of Clear Creek, to the north.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Avondale, MO

England's River Avon gave Avondale its name. The small city is pressed between Kansas City to the north and North Kansas City to the south, and the River Forest and Cooley Highlands neighborhoods form its north-west and north-east borders. Say 'Avondale' and a cross street so no one looks for you next door.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Oakview, MO

Oakview is the northernmost of the four villages enclosed by Gladstone, bordered by Gladstone everywhere except a stretch of its south side shared with Oakwood Park. Its city hall, where the neighboring village of Oaks once held board meetings, is a handy landmark if you are unsure of the street.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Missouri City, MO

Missouri City was pieced together in 1859 from the river towns of St. Bernard, Richfield and Atchison, on the Missouri east of Liberty. It began as Williams' Landing, with a ferry at the mouth of Rose's branch, shipped hemp in its day and later grew along the Wabash Railroad. Tell us whether you are in town or down by the river.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Excelsior Estates, MO

Excelsior Estates crosses from Clay into Ray County between Excelsior Springs to the south and Lawson to the north, and it is part of the Excelsior Springs school district. Because of that county line, give the town name and the street rather than a county, which could put the truck on the wrong side.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Oakwood, MO

Oakwood was laid out in the early 1920s and named for a grove of oaks near the first town site. It sits between Oakwood Park to the north and Oaks to the south with Gladstone on both sides, and its easternmost point touches Kansas City's Davidson neighborhood. Its village board meets at the Antioch Branch library in Gladstone.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Birmingham, MO

Birmingham dates from 1887 and shares its name with the English city. Kansas City now surrounds it, with the Minneville neighborhood to the north and west and the Birmingham Bottoms to the south and east. The village lies south of Liberty and south-east of Claycomo; if you are down in the Bottoms rather than the village, say so.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Oakwood Park, MO

Oakwood Park, a tiny residential village, fills the gap between Oakview to the north and Oakwood to the south, with Gladstone on its east and west. At this scale the street and house number are what dispatch needs, not the village name alone.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Oaks, MO

At the southern end of the row of villages inside Gladstone, Oaks has Oakwood around its north and east sides, Gladstone to the west and Kansas City's Davidson neighborhood across its southern edge. Spell out 'Oaks' and give the street, since the name is easy to confuse with the villages next door.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Prathersville, MO

J. A. Prather ran a local mill here, and Prathersville still carries his name; the village lies south-west of Excelsior Springs and south-east of Kearney, and its post office closed in 1904. In open country like this, the road name, the direction you were driving and the nearest farm or crossroads are what put a truck beside you.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Mosby, MO

Mosby, on the Fishing River north-east of Liberty, reaches into three school districts: Excelsior Springs, Liberty and Kearney. The name comes from A. G. Mosby, the original owner of the site. If you have left the road anywhere near the river, say so when you call.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Randolph, MO

Tiny Randolph hugs the banks of the Missouri River east of North Kansas City, with Kansas City on every land border and on the far bank too. Its older names were East Kansas City and Randolph Heights. Say whether you are in Randolph itself or out on the Kansas City streets around it.

Clay County towing — common questions

Will you come out when the Fishing River is up around Mosby and Excelsior Springs?

Yes, 24 hours a day, but Titan Tow & Repair will not drive a truck into moving water, and you should not either. Mosby lies along the Fishing River and Excelsior Springs along its East Fork, and Excelsior Springs has flooded more than once; a dike built after flooding in 1955 now guards the Hall of Waters. If your vehicle is in water, get out and up to higher ground, call 911 if anyone is at risk, then call us with the road name. We recover it as soon as it can be reached safely.

Which bridge should I name if I break down between North Kansas City and downtown?

Name the bridge and the highway on it. Titan Tow & Repair works all four highway crossings between North Kansas City and downtown Kansas City around the clock: the Bond Bridge on I-29, I-35 and US-71, the Buck O'Neil Bridge on US-169, the Heart of America Bridge on Route 9 and the Chouteau Bridge on Route 269. Tell us which one, the direction you were heading and whether you are on the span or the approach, then get behind the barrier while you wait.

How do I describe my location in Oaks, Oakwood or the other villages inside Gladstone?

Give the village name, the street and the nearest cross street off North Oak Trafficway. Titan Tow & Repair covers Oakview, Oakwood Park, Oakwood and Oaks just as it covers Gladstone, but the four sit in a chain inside Gladstone's south-west corner, and 'Gladstone' alone can send a truck to the wrong block. Oaks, at the southern end, borders Kansas City's Davidson neighborhood, so say which side of that line you are on.

Can you pull a loaded semi out of the Missouri River bottoms beside Route 210 at Missouri City?

Yes. From the Liberty yard, Titan Tow & Repair dispatches a heavy wrecker or its heavy-duty tow unit, and WreckMaster-certified operators set the winch-out for soft bottom ground to bring the rig back up onto Route 210. The highway follows the Missouri River bottoms for most of its length, and at Missouri City it swings east toward Excelsior Springs Junction and Cooley Lake. Give dispatch your direction, the closest crossroad and the load, or call (816) 888-8732.
