Heavy-duty, semi and semi trailer towing in Kansas City, Kansas

Titan Tow & Repair tows semi tractors, loaded trailers, buses and equipment throughout Kansas City, Kansas, 24 hours a day, dispatched from our yard in Liberty, MO. We run the Wyandotte County freight roads — I-70, I-635, I-435, K-32 and K-7 — with a heavy wrecker and WreckMaster-certified operators, we recover units that are stuck, jackknifed or rolled, and crossing the state line mid-job is routine here.

The state line is the only thing about this side of the metro that looks simple on a map. Which agency runs the scene, which number you dial and where the mile markers start all change the moment a truck stops in Wyandotte County.

Corridors and trouble spots

Kansas City, KS heavy-duty towing, corridor by corridor

The Lewis and Clark Viaduct

I-70 crosses the Kansas River and the bottoms on the viaduct, a run of bridges KDOT maintains that carries the interstate out of Kansas City, Kansas toward the line. There is almost nothing to pull onto, the mile markers reset underneath you, and a stopped tractor-trailer up there is a lane-closure conversation before it is a hook.

Fairfax and Armourdale

Two river-bottom industrial districts working behind the levees — Fairfax on the Missouri River bend off I-635, Armourdale inside the oxbow of the Kansas River. The work in both is dock and yard work rather than highway work: a trailer that will not come off a dock plate, a unit that has sunk on wet ground, a tractor parked where there is no room to rig.

Argentine, Turner and the I-70 distribution ground

The BNSF yard at Argentine is the largest classification yard on that railroad's network, and the Turner Diagonal is the truck route that feeds it and the logistics parks built at its I-70 interchange. That puts loaded drop trailers and container chassis on private ground with gates, guards and no shoulder — access is what decides these jobs.

The west end: K-7, US-73 and the turnpike

West out of the city, I-70 becomes the Kansas Turnpike at its eastern terminal, where K-7, US-24, US-40 and US-73 all meet it. K-7 and US-73 then run north along the western city limits. It matters for one practical reason: on the turnpike the emergency number is not the one that works on the rest of the Kansas side.

Big rig towing on I-635 and I-435 through KCK

I-635 is the connector interstate through Kansas City, Kansas. From I-35 in Johnson County it runs north through Argentine, crosses the Kansas River and meets I-70 almost at once, then carries on through the north side of the city to K-5 and a Missouri River bridge into Riverside, Missouri. On the way it bridges the rail yard in Argentine as well as both rivers, and it takes traffic around downtown Kansas City through residential parts of KCK, so for an 18-wheeler that stops on it, the bridge or the block shapes the job as much as the load does.

I-435, the bi-state loop, is the western interstate through KCK. It comes over the Missouri River into Wyandotte County, shares a two-exit stretch with K-5 north of Leavenworth Road, meets I-70 at Village West beside the Kansas Speedway, and crosses K-32 on the Edwardsville line before its Kaw River bridge; Turner lies between it and I-635. Unlike I-70, it keeps counting mileposts across the state line, so an I-435 marker number points to one place only. For cars and pickups on the same roads, see towing in KCK; for a unit off the pavement or on its side, see semi truck recovery.

A loaded tractor-trailer is not a bigger car. It needs a rated wrecker, a rated operator and a plan before anything gets hooked. That is what we send.

Mobile trailer repair

Most trailer faults do not stop a trailer moving. They stop it being legal to move, which is worse — the load sits while the paperwork says it cannot go anywhere.

Kansas City, KS heavy-duty towing questions

Which highway patrol responds to a truck breakdown on the Kansas side of Kansas City?

The Kansas Highway Patrol, and the cellular number is *47 rather than the *55 you would dial in Missouri. On the Kansas Turnpike itself it is *582, which reaches the turnpike authority's own incident center instead of a general dispatcher. Call 911 first if the unit is in a live lane, or if there is a crash, fire or injury. When you call us, say which state you are standing in before you give a mile marker — I-70's numbers reset at the state line, so a marker on its own can put us on the wrong side of the river.

Can you tow a truck from Kansas City, Kansas across the state line into Missouri?

Yes. Our yard is at 2751 Liberty Landing Rd. in Liberty, Missouri, so a Kansas call has already crossed the line once before we reach you, and where the unit goes afterwards is your choice — your own shop, a dealer, a Kansas yard or ours. Kansas plates, a Kansas-based fleet or a Kansas destination change nothing about the job. Tell us the drop address when you call so the route is worked out before the unit is hooked rather than after.

Do you need a rotator to recover a loaded trailer in Wyandotte County?

Usually not, and we would rather be straight with you: we do not run a rotator. What we run is a heavy wrecker with rated rigging and WreckMaster-certified operators, which covers winch-outs, jackknifed tractors and uprighting on the large majority of these calls. A rotator earns its keep on a narrow set of jobs — a unit over the side of a structure, or a lift with no ground to work from. If yours is one of those, we will say so on the phone rather than arrive and find out in front of you.

Can you move a dozer or an excavator off a Kansas City, Kansas job site?

Not that class of machine. Tracked earthmoving equipment travels on a lowboy and we do not haul on one. What we do move is skid steers, lifts, containers and yard machinery, along with the tractors and trailers that bring them to the warehouse and distribution ground out along the Turner Diagonal. Tell us the make, the rough weight and whether it still rolls, and if it is a lowboy job we will tell you before you are stood waiting on a truck that cannot load it.

How do I tell a heavy wrecker where my semi is on I-635 in KCK?

Give us your direction, the last interchange you passed and whether you are north or south of the Kansas River. Northbound from Johnson County, the interchanges in KCK run Shawnee Drive and Metropolitan Avenue, then K-32 at Kansas Avenue before the river; after it come I-70, State Avenue, Parallel Parkway, Leavenworth Road and North 38th Street, and K-5. On the Missouri River bridge, say which end you are nearer, because the river is the state line there. Then say if the trailer is loaded, and whether the unit sits on the shoulder or in a lane.

My semi is leaking fuel on the shoulder in KCK. Who deals with that before the tow?

The fire department, before we do. Call 911 first: a leaking tank or load is a scene for the fire service before it is a tow, and the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department runs its own hazardous materials team. We work to whoever is in charge of the scene on the order things happen, so the heavy wrecker is rigged once they say the unit can be moved, and then it goes where you choose. When you call us, say what is leaking, whether the trailer carries hazmat placards and whether the fire department is already there.

The tractor is gone and the trailer is still sitting in KCK. Who moves it?

A heavy wrecker can, without a tractor and without unloading it. Titan Tow & Repair moves loaded semi trailers on their own once the brakes will release, the lights work, the tires and wheel ends are sound and the landing gear is cranked fully up, and we can often fix whichever of those is holding it where it stands. Tell us who controls the trailer, because the carrier or shipper has to authorize the move, and where it should go, on either side of the state line.
