Roads and landmarks around Smithville in Clay and Platte Counties

Smithville splits into two kinds of work. On US-169 it is commercial — trucks running between the north metro and St. Joseph. Around the lake it is boats, trailers and pickups, and vehicles that have dropped a wheel off a gravel launch approach or a campground track.

Boat and camper trailers need a different hook than a car does. Tell us what is attached and whether it can be unhitched where it sits.

Tow truck service in Smithville, from US-169 to the lake

Smithville lies along the Little Platte River in western Clay County and reaches over the line into Platte County. US-169 crosses the whole city on its west side, divided in the southernmost quarter and undivided in the north half. Coming up from the metro, it leaves the Arrowhead Trafficway at I-435 as a four-lane divided expressway, and north of Smithville it turns into a two-lane rural highway through Trimble and Gower to St. Joseph. On US-169, tell us your direction and the nearest cross street.

Route 92 crosses the southern third of the city, west to Platte City and east past the south side of Smithville Lake to I-35 and Route 33 at Kearney. Main Street downtown is Route DD, which carries on east toward the lake. In the north-east, the unsigned Route F follows North Bridge Street, East 1st Street, Spelman Drive and Northeast 172nd Street, and Route KK is a short route in the north-west. The lake is the Little Platte itself, dammed just east of the city.

Car, pickup and semi towing in Smithville

Smithville is named for Humphrey “Yankee” Smith, who settled at the site in 1822; the town was first known as Smith’s Mill, and its downtown is a historic district on the National Register. If a car or pickup there is still dead after we have tried to start it, change the tire or open the door, it rides a rollback flatbed to your mechanic, a dealer or our Liberty yard. On US-169, a semi or loaded trailer is towed by the heavy wrecker unless its air, tire or electrical fault can be repaired on the shoulder.

Towing in Smithville: common questions

Can you recover a truck and trailer at Smithville Lake?

Yes. A vehicle stuck on a launch approach or campground track around Smithville Lake is a winch-out, and it is usually a traction problem rather than a weight one. Tell us what is hitched to the vehicle and whether it can be unhitched where it sits — a boat or camper trailer needs a different hook than a car does, and unhitching in place often turns one recovery into two simple pulls.

Do you cover US-169 through Smithville?

Yes. US-169 is one of the corridors we cover between the north metro and St. Joseph, and Smithville sits on it where Route 92 and Route DD come in. It is a mixed stretch — farm traffic, lake traffic and through freight — so tell us what you are driving as well as where you are.
