Roads and landmarks around Kearney in Clay County
Kearney sits directly north of us on I-35, and its stretch of the interstate runs from the Route 92 exit up to the county line. Off the interstate it turns rural fast, with soft shoulders and field entrances on the haul roads either side of Route 92.
Rural shoulders here are softer than they look after rain. If a wheel has dropped off the pavement, tell us how far — it is the difference between a winch-out and a recovery.

Towing in Kearney, on I-35 between Liberty and Cameron
Kearney grew out of two settlements. Centerville was founded in 1856 in what is now the south-east of town, and in 1867 John Lawrence laid out a second settlement beside the new Kansas City and Cameron Railroad, part of the Hannibal and Saint Joseph, whose president was Charles E. Kearney. The two merged and were incorporated as Kearney in 1869, and the line still operates as the BNSF. Jesse James was born on the family farm north-east of the town site in 1847 and now rests in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kearney.
Heading north from Liberty, I-35 leaves US-69 and makes a north-northeast course to Kearney, then carries on past Lake Arrowhead and Wallace State Park to Cameron. Route 92 comes east from Smithville Lake, crosses I-35 and meets Route 33 immediately after, all inside Kearney, then runs on south of Watkins Woolen Mill State Park to Excelsior Springs. Route 33 comes up from Liberty to Route 92 in town and then passes under I-35 on its way north toward Holt.
Semi and car towing in Kearney
When a tractor-trailer stops on I-35 at Kearney, the first question is what failed: air, tires, lights and batteries can often be fixed on the shoulder by the mobile service truck, and anything else goes behind the heavy wrecker. For a car, pickup or van, the order is roadside help first, then a rollback flatbed if it still will not move. Semi and heavy-duty towing on the I-35 corridor north of Liberty runs around the clock.

Towing in Kearney: common questions
Do you cover I-35 north of Kansas City toward Kearney and Cameron?
Yes. I-35 north is one of our main corridors, and Kearney sits on it at the Route 92 exit. Give us the mile marker and direction of travel and we will be moving before you hang up. Cameron, at the top of the same stretch, is also inside our area.
Can you winch a truck out of a soft shoulder near Kearney?
Yes. After rain, the shoulders on the Route 92 truck route and the farm and haul roads east of town are softer than they look, and a wheel that has dropped off the edge sinks rather than slides. Tell us how far off the pavement you are and whether the unit is loaded — that is the difference between a winch-out and a full recovery.
