Working the roads in Daviess County

Daviess County has two road systems. In the west, I-35 and US-69 run past Pattonsburg, and Winston sits on US-69 in the south-west of the county. Across the middle, Route 6 runs from Altamont north-east to Gallatin, the county seat, where it crosses Route 13, and carries on toward Jamesport, which sits on Route 190 just south of it. Route 13 continues north from Gallatin to Coffey, and Route 190 heads south from Jamesport to Lock Springs, then east-southeast into Livingston County toward Chillicothe.

Plan around the Grand River. It cuts through the county, passing east of Gallatin and south-west of Lock Springs, and Big Creek joins it south-east of Pattonsburg. The 1993 flood forced Pattonsburg to move, so treat the bottoms along both as flood country. The east of the county around Jamesport is home to the largest Amish community in Missouri. Winters are very cold and snowy. On I-35, give the mile marker and your direction of travel; everywhere else, give the route number, the nearest town and which side of the Grand River you are on.

Lake Viking is an unincorporated community and census-designated place built around a private reservoir of the same name on South Big Creek, a tributary of the Grand River. It lies east of I-35, south-west of the county's center, and stretches south-west as far as the village of Altamont, with Gallatin, the county seat, to the east. Part of the community is in the Winston R-VI school district and part in Gallatin R-V. Around the lake, give the road name and say which shore you are on.

Pattonsburg moved after the Great Flood of 1993 devastated the old town, and residents chose higher ground north of the original site. The new town is in the north-west of the county, just west of US-69 and a short way west of I-35, with Big Creek passing to the east on its way to the Grand River.

Winters here are very cold and snowy.

Altamont is on Route 6 north-east of Winston, and the same highway carries on north-east to Gallatin. Laid out around 1890, it was the youngest town in the county and was named for its lofty elevation; its children attend Gallatin R-V schools.

Daviess County towing — common questions

Is Old Pattonsburg the same place as Pattonsburg when I give dispatch my location?

No. Titan Tow & Repair needs to know which one you mean, because they are separate sites. Old Pattonsburg is the original town, devastated by the Great Flood of 1993; residents rebuilt on higher ground to the north, and that newer town is today's Pattonsburg, just west of US-69 and a short way west of I-35. If you are down at the old site, say so plainly and give the road you came in on. Near the new town, give your road and your direction from US-69 or the interstate, plus the mile marker if you are on I-35.

Should I try to drive out of the Grand River bottoms near Gallatin, or call first?

Call first. Titan Tow & Repair would rather rig a clean winch-out than dig out a vehicle that has spun itself down to the frame, and every attempt to drive out of soft river-bottom ground tends to sink the wheels deeper. The Grand River flows past just east of Gallatin, so say whether you are in the bottoms on that side of town or up on Route 6 or Route 13. Then tell us how far you are from solid road, whether a trailer is hitched and whether the vehicle is upright.

My rig lost air on Route 13 north of Gallatin. Can it be fixed on the shoulder?

Often, yes. Titan Tow & Repair's mobile service truck repairs air leaks at the roadside, from lines and glad hands to brake chambers, and it can reach you anywhere on Route 13 between Gallatin and Coffey. Tell us your direction of travel and the nearest town, what the air gauges show, whether the leak is on the tractor or the trailer and whether the brakes have set. If the fault turns out to be one that cannot be repaired on the shoulder, a heavy wrecker takes the unit wherever you want it.

Who handles accident recovery for a tractor-trailer where I-35 crosses the Grand River near Pattonsburg?

Titan Tow & Repair handles it around the clock: once the scene is released, WreckMaster-certified operators recover the tractor and trailer using heavy wreckers or the heavy-duty tow unit. On I-35, the Grand River crossing lies between exit 72 at Route DD and exit 78 at Route C, the Pattonsburg exit, west of the Elam Bend Conservation Area. Report your direction, the closest mile marker and any spilled load when you call (816) 888-8732.
