Working the roads in Richardson County

Richardson County is the south-east corner of Nebraska, with Kansas along its southern line and the Missouri River, and Missouri beyond it, on the east. US-73 and US-75 run north and south through the county, and US-73 passes straight through Falls City, the county seat. From Falls City, US-159 runs east to the Rulo bridge, the county's road connection to Missouri, while N-8 runs west toward Salem and on along the state's southern border. Other state highways link the smaller towns. Several branches of the Big Nemaha River cross the county toward the south-east and meet the Missouri at the county's south-east corner.

Most of Richardson County is farmland on rolling hills cut by drainages. The old Rulo toll bridge that carried its road link to Missouri was judged too narrow for semi-trailers and farm machinery, and a newer US-159 bridge replaced it. Coal trains still run along the north side of Preston on a regular schedule. Parts of the Ioway and Sac and Fox reservations lie in the south-east corner between Falls City, Rulo and Hiawatha, Kansas, with Preston inside the Sac and Fox land. Titan's service area takes in a few Nebraska towns here. When you call, give the road number, the nearest town and which state you are in, because Kansas is just to the south.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Falls City, NE

Falls City, the county seat, stands on the north side of the Big Nemaha River and is named for the Falls of Nemaha, a rock ledge whose remains still show at the Old Nemaha river bend above Nemaha Falls Cemetery in dry seasons. US-73 runs north and south through the city, US-159 heads east for the Rulo bridge and N-8 runs west toward Salem. The Missouri Pacific once made it a division point.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Rulo, NE

Rulo is the Nebraska end of the US-159 bridge over the Missouri River, and it is named for Charlie Rouleau, the original owner of the town site. The present bridge replaced the old Rulo toll bridge, which was torn down after it was judged too narrow for semi-trailers and farm machinery. The village lies east of Falls City, so a truck crossing from Missouri reaches Rulo first.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Barada, NE

Barada is a small village in the north-east of Richardson County, north of Falls City, named for the frontier folk hero Barada, who ran a trading post on the former Nemaha Half-Breed Reservation. The school district line splits the village between Falls City and Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer. For a breakdown near Barada, name the road and say which way Falls City lies from you.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Preston, NE

Preston sits inside the Sac and Fox Reservation, south-east of Falls City, and was platted where the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad reached it, with an elevator and a depot beside the tracks. The depot closed long ago, but coal trains still run along the north side of town on a regular schedule. If a vehicle stalls on or near the Preston tracks, get everyone clear, then tell us that first.

Richardson County towing — common questions

Can a heavy wrecker reach Rulo over the US-159 Missouri River bridge?

Yes. Titan Tow & Repair's heavy wreckers reach Rulo and the rest of Richardson County over the US-159 bridge from the Missouri side. It is the newer bridge that replaced the old Rulo toll bridge, which was judged too narrow for semi-trailers and farm machinery. If you are broken down on the bridge approach, in Rulo or on US-159 west toward Falls City, tell us which, along with the weight and whether the trailer is loaded.

Will a wrecker come all the way from Liberty, Missouri, to Falls City, Nebraska?

Yes. Titan Tow & Repair's service area takes in a few Nebraska towns in Richardson County, Falls City among them, and we run there 24 hours a day from our yard in Liberty, Missouri. Falls City is the county seat, with US-73 through town, US-159 east to Rulo and N-8 west toward Salem, so tell us which of those roads you are on and which way you were headed. It is a long run, so the details of the vehicle and the load matter on the first call.

What should I tell dispatch if my vehicle stalls near the coal line at Preston?

Tell us first that you are by the railroad at Preston, and if the vehicle is on the tracks, get everyone out and call 911 before anything else. Titan Tow & Repair's dispatcher then needs the road you are on, which side of the tracks the vehicle is on and whether it blocks them. Coal trains run along the north side of Preston on a regular schedule, so a stall near the line is treated as urgent.
