Working the roads in Atchison County

US-59 and US-73 cross at Atchison, the county seat, on the Missouri River's western bank, where the river also marks the Kansas–Missouri line. From that junction US-59 heads for St. Joseph, over in Missouri, and US-73 heads south-east for Leavenworth as part of the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway; north of town the byway follows K-7, and US-73 also carries the Lewis and Clark Trail designation. Inland, the county's other major highways are US-159, K-9 and K-116, and there is no interstate on the list. Beyond Atchison the county is farm country around small railroad towns: Effingham, Muscotah, Lancaster and Huron.

A job here is either river town or farm road. Atchison grew as a Missouri River port and railroad town, where the Santa Fe began and where grain elevators, flour mills and later a locomotive-parts foundry went up, and it has Benedictine College and two technical college campuses. West of the river the towns are small, so give dispatch the highway number, the nearest town and the way you were heading, and if you have left the highway, the name or number of the road you turned onto. Part of the Kickapoo Indian Reservation of Kansas also lies in the county.

Towing in Atchison

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Lancaster, KS

West of Atchison and north-east of Effingham, Lancaster was platted in 1857, possibly named for Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was an early contender for county seat. It grew as a station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and by 1915 it had a grain elevator, a lumber yard and a hotel alongside its stores and churches. For a breakdown on the roads around it, tell us whether Lancaster or Atchison is the closer town.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Muscotah, KS

Muscotah's name comes from the Kickapoo word for "prairie". The town was first platted north-east of where it stands, then rebuilt on the Central Branch Union Pacific line near the Delaware River once it was clear the tracks would pass just to the south. In 2013 its old water tower tank became the World's Largest Baseball Sculpture, in memory of Joe Tinker, and that is the landmark to give us if you are anywhere near town. Muscotah lies west of Effingham.

Towing service and heavy-duty recovery in Huron, KS

Huron is a very small city in Lancaster Township, north of Effingham and north-west of Atchison. It was platted in 1882, when the railroad was extended to that point, and named for Col. Anthony Huron, one of the original owners of the town site. Around a place this small, the details dispatch can use are the road you are on and whether Huron or Effingham is nearer.

What we can do for you here

Atchison County towing — common questions

Is Muscotah's baseball water tower a good landmark to give a towing dispatcher?

Yes. The World's Largest Baseball Sculpture, Muscotah's old water tower tank converted in memory of Joe Tinker, is a fixed point Titan Tow & Repair can find without guesswork. Tell us whether you are in town near it or out on a road nearby, which direction from Muscotah you are, and what you are driving. Muscotah sits west of Effingham near the Delaware River, so if you are between the two towns, say which one is closer.

My truck quit on US-159 in rural Atchison County. What does dispatch need from me?

The highway, which way you were driving and the closest town. With those three, Titan Tow & Repair can plan the run on US-159, K-9, K-116 or any other Atchison County highway before a truck leaves Liberty, at any hour. Add the weight class and whether the trailer is loaded, and if a wheel has dropped off the pavement into soft ground, say so, because that decides whether we send a wrecker rigged for recovery.

Can you reach a truck on K-7 where the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway heads north from Atchison?

Yes. Titan Tow & Repair covers K-7 north of Atchison, the road the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway follows out of town, at any hour, with a heavy wrecker, a rollback or the mobile service truck, whichever the job calls for. Tell us which way you are facing, what the last crossroad sign said and whether you are loaded. A flat, a leaking air line or a wiring fault can often be fixed on the spot, which saves you a tow.

My loaded semi dropped two wheels off K-9 where it ends at US-73 south of Lancaster. Can you pull it back up?

Yes. Titan Tow & Repair can send its heavy-duty tow unit or a heavy wrecker, and WreckMaster-certified operators will rig a winch-out that brings tractor and trailer back onto the pavement. That junction is where K-9 ends after its run east from Effingham, just below Lancaster. On the call, say whether you went off K-9 or US-73, which way you were heading, how deep the wheels are and what you are hauling. Dispatch picks up (816) 888-8732 at any hour.
