What to do when your truck breaks down on the highway
The order to do things in when a commercial vehicle stops on an interstate shoulder in Missouri or Kansas, before a tow truck is even called.
- 1. Get off the live lane if the truck still movesIf the unit will still roll, get it onto the shoulder and as far right as the pavement allows, past the rumble strip. A truck stopped in a live lane is the single biggest risk in the whole event.
- 2. Hazards on, triangles outFour-way flashers immediately. Then set reflective triangles at roughly 10, 100 and 200 feet behind the unit — further back on a curve or a crest where you cannot be seen coming.
- 3. Get yourself behind the barrierDo not stand between the truck and traffic, and do not sit in the cab on a narrow shoulder. Get behind the guardrail or well up the bank while you make the call.
- 4. Fix your position before you dialNote the highway number, the direction of travel and the nearest mile marker or exit. On surface streets use a cross street or a business name. This is the single thing that most changes how fast help arrives.
- 5. Call and describe the vehicle honestlyCall (816) 888-8732. Say what you drive, whether it is loaded and with what, whether it still builds air and rolls, and what failed. That decides which truck is dispatched.
- 6. Ask whether it can be repaired on sceneAir leaks, brake chambers, batteries, starters, hoses and trailer lights are frequently fixable at the roadside. Ask before you agree to a tow — it can save the tow bill and the shop wait entirely.

Can you fix it instead of towing it?
Often, yes — most breakdowns never need a tow truck. Our service truck handles air systems, brakes, batteries, starters, alternators, cooling, suspension, steering and trailer repairs at the roadside. If we can fix it where it sits, you skip both the tow bill and the shop queue.
How much does a tow cost?

How long will it take you to get here?

Do you tow motorcycles, RVs or campers?
RVs and campers, yes — on the flatbed, size depending, so describe the unit when you call. Motorcycles depend on the bike and the equipment available; ask us on the phone rather than assuming either way.
